The pain: Every post gets the same comment — “menu??” — and the orders that do come in arrive as DMs and comments somebody has to keep straight.
Set up your menu and share it: a link for your posts and bio, a QR code for the window. Customers browse — photos, prices, today's items — on their own phones immediately, even before you've connected payments. Then connect your Stripe or Square account and the same page starts taking paid orders: each one lands on whatever screen you're signed into, and emails the venue if no screen is open, so nothing is silently missed.
Cost: $0 — you pay only per-order fees when you actually sell. Customers' phones load the menu and place orders through our servers over their own data; orders reach any screen of yours the same way. Your equipment is involved exactly zero percent.
The pain: Handwritten tickets, mental math for change, and a card machine that doesn't talk to anything.
Open the counter screen on your phone: tap items, cash gets a change calculator, and card customers keep paying on the terminal you already own — you mark the sale “paid on my card machine” and the ticket still reaches the kitchen. Serve-It never forces you off your current processor to get digital tickets.
Cost: $0. Your phone talks to our servers over its own data. The card machine keeps doing whatever it did before, completely independent.
The pain: Two devices at the window, and sales split across systems that never quite reconcile.
Tap to Pay turns an NFC Android phone into the card reader — no hardware at all. Prefer dedicated hardware? A Stripe Reader M2 ($59, pairs with the phone running the counter app), a countertop WisePOS E ($249) or S700 ($349), or a Square Terminal ($299). All one-time purchases, no rentals. iPhone Tap to Pay is waiting on Apple's approval — Android has it today.
Cost: $0 (Tap to Pay) · $59–$349 one-time for a reader. The phone or reader talks to your payment processor over the internet. Money settles straight into your own Stripe or Square account — it never passes through us.
The pain: The cook and the window are sharing one phone, and orders are being shouted over a fryer.
Any tablet with a browser, opened to your kitchen page. Orders slide across lanes as you work them, and a chime repeats until someone acknowledges the new ticket — built for a kitchen where everyone's hands are full. No app to install, nothing to pair.
Cost: ~$160 (an 11-inch Android tablet; street price, check the vendor). The tablet just needs internet — its own SIM, the venue's WiFi, or your phone's hotspot. It never needs to see the other devices.
The pain: The kitchen wants tickets on the rail (or stickers on bags), and screens need a glance someone doesn't have.
A Star CloudPRNT printer. It talks straight to our servers — no computer in the middle, nothing plugged into your phone. Paper tickets on an ordinary receipt roll: a standard TSP143IV or compact mC-Print2, from ~$200. Sticky labels for bags and cups: the TSP143IV SK, ~$500. Prices are the vendor's, not ours.
Cost: ~$200 (receipt tickets) · ~$500 (sticky labels). The printer polls our servers over the internet every few seconds and prints whatever's queued. Wired models need an Ethernet jack — that's the one place the little travel router below earns its keep.
This is the part people treat like rocket science, and it isn't: each device makes its own ordinary internet connection to our servers, the same way it loads any website. There is no local network to build, no pairing, no cables between devices. Pick whichever way of getting online is easiest:
A phone with a data plan and a tablet with its own SIM just work. Nothing to configure, nothing to keep alive. If your devices already have data, you're done — skip the rest of this section.
A WiFi-only tablet can ride your phone's hotspot. Turn off the hotspot's idle timeout in the phone's settings so it doesn't nap between rushes. The one catch: the hotspot lives in a pocket, and it walks away when its owner does.
A palm-sized travel router (~$30–60) fixes both hotspot gripes at once. It gives the truck one WiFi network that never walks away, and — the real reason it's here — it has the Ethernet jack a wired ticket printer plugs into. It gets its own internet one of three ways: a USB cable to your phone (the phone shares its data, the router shares it onward, and the phone charges while it's at it — that's all “USB tethering” means), joining your phone's hotspot, or taking a SIM card of its own.
Use it when it's good, but don't build your day on it — event WiFi is exactly as reliable as the crowd is small. Serve-It also keeps working through rough patches: counter orders taken while the connection is down are saved on the device and sent the moment it returns.
